Welcome to 5th grade in Room 7!!!
Dear Parents/Guardians:
You are a valuable part of your child’s education. Communication between home and school is a wonderful component to your child’s success in school. I look forward to being apart of your child’s education at Oakridge Upper Elementary. My goal is for each 5th grader to reach their personal learning goals and have a very successful year. The information listed below will help provide an overall description of room 7 procedures.
Our theme this year is Working as a Team! We will be doing many new things this year in fifth grade, but with all of us working together as a team everyone can be successful.
I. Student Planners (Assignment Books)
The Student Planner has been designed, and provided by the school, to help your child organize their work, and gain greater responsibilities as a learner. They are also very helpful to parents so you can see what your child is learning in school and when homework is due. ***Homework will always be circled.***
The Student Friday Folder has been designed to provide weekly communication to parents on their child, parent communication to and from the teacher, and will enclose students' weekly assignment..
· Each Friday the student will take his or her Friday Folder home. It is due back the following Monday.
· Friday Folders will have the students’ work from the week, lunch slip, and various other communications from the school.
· If you have any questions or concerns regarding the use of the student planners or folders, please feel free to contact Mrs. Brianne Babinec at 788-7537. Thank you for your cooperation. The Student Planners and Friday Folders are great tools of communication between home and school.
III. Homework Plan:
The 5th grade homework policy is that any assignment that is turned in late will be marked down. Students with missing assignments may have to stay in during recess for study hall to complete the work. I hope this doesn’t happen often. If there is a problem with continuous late work, you will be notified right away. As a parent you should expect that your child will have reading and math homework daily. It is important to help your child set aside a specific time and place to do homework everyday. This will help them get into a routine that will help them to be successful with their schoolwork.
IV. Snacks/Birthdays/Holiday Celebrations:
If you choose to send a snack to school with your child please send a healthy snack. It needs to be something that kids can keep in their lockers until snack without spoiling. I encourage students to bring a water bottle from home. Water and healthy snacks provide fuel for the brain. Your child is discouraged from bringing in soda, candy bars, or any other unhealthy snack.
All classrooms are peanut and tree nut free, so please make sure to not to send in any snacks or treats that contain peanuts/tree nuts. Also, no baked goods are allowed in the classrooms.
Birthday treats may be brought in for the whole class to enjoy. This is the family’s choice. If your family doesn’t celebrate birthdays, please let me know. It is not my intention to upset a child.
Holiday celebrations will occur in room 7 for the following holidays: Halloween, Christmas, and Valentines Day. Each child will be assigned to a committee. The committee will plan the party and provide the food.
Halloween: Students whose numbers range from 1-10
Christmas: Students whose numbers range from 11-20
Valentine’s Day: Students whose numbers range from 21-30
V. Attendance:
If your child will be absent from school, please call the main office @ 788-7500, and have them excused. If you know in advance that your child will be out of school, I will try to get their assignments together ahead of time. Please try to allow me 24 hours notice so I am able to explain the assignments to your child. Attendance is critical to your child’s success in school. We are learning new concepts every day. I do realize emergencies come up. This is where communication is critical so I can do everything possible to support you and your child’s efforts for success.
VI. Discipline:
Respect is our central theme in room 7. Students will need to respect others, property, and any adults in the building, and MOST OF ALL THEMSELVES. Those choosing not to follow the rules will be given one warning depending on the severity of the situation. If a child continues to break classroom rules, consequences such as loss of recess, calls home, office referrals, and restorative measures will follow.
VII. Book Orders:
Reading opens up many opportunities for students. I will be placing book orders through Scholastic Books. On the back of the book order form, there will be a due date of when I need to receive all orders. Please make all checks payable to Scholastic Book Clubs. If ordering from more than one catalog, only one check is needed. Remember to allow at least 7 to 10 days for the books to come in after the order is placed. Books make great birthday and Christmas presents.
VIII. Lunch Money:
Lunch money is collected on Mondays. Please send your child’s money in an envelope with THEIR NAME, AMOUNT, AND ROOM NUMBER clearly marked on the outside. Also please do not put anything but lunch money in the envelope. If you have more than one child, you can combine them into one envelope; however, just remember to put the names of all children and room numbers on the outside. Otherwise, all the money will go into one account.
IX. Grading Scale:
93-100 A 73-76 C
90-92 A- 70-72 C-
87-89 B+ 67-69 D+

- If a student continuously forgets his/her planner, and/or it is not signed, they may have to stay in at recess time.
